How to engage on Instagram to boost the visibility and growth of your brand

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you must do a little engaging yourself to get more Instagram engagement!

You might be wondering if you should bother spending the time scrolling on Instagram or would your time be better used working on that to-do list.

We have to remember that Instagram is a social app. Engaging with other accounts helps our account gain visibility, growth, and builds connections.

Once the algorithm sees you interact with others, it recognizes that you have a connection and interest in that user. Therefore, your content has a higher chance of being recommended to their newsfeed.

It also helps teach the algorithm what type of content you like and promotes more of that content type in your feed.

Do you feel lost on where to start when it comes to engaging with other accounts on Instagram?

Start local and grow outwards. Start engaging with businesses, community organizers, influencers and bloggers. Push that engagement outwards by following more and more businesses.

Here is my go-to formula that I use to increase my brand’s engagement and visibility on Instagram.

Post & Reels

Leave a comment! Ask a question back and leave a sentence or two so your comment stands out! Keep the conversation going in the comments.

Hashtags

Discover new accounts in industry hashtags. Make your interactions meaningful through comments, story replies, and follow those accounts if they interest you.

Large Industry Accounts

Leave a comment on larger accounts and engage with people that are also commenting.

Stories

The easiest way to build connections with someone is through stories. Reply to a story that resonates with you. Now you can start a conversation in the DM’s.

Followers

Focusing on engaging with your followers is key to building relationships and keeping your content visible. Don't just focus on finding new accounts. Spend time replying to comments left on your content and reciprocating engagement with those that follow you.

DM’s

Get the conversation started. Avoid jumping into a sales pitch. Be genuine and learn more about the person if you pop into someone's DM’s.

Account Notifications

Turn on account notifications for your favourite accounts so that you are notified when they share new content. You can promptly engage!

If you are finding all of this overwhelming here are some things to remember:

  • Be intentional. Set a timer. I recommend engaging 30 minutes a day if you are just getting started. If you can only do 10 minutes at a time, do just that.

  • Make sure it doesn't take away from your other duties. It's okay if you don't engage daily. We all get busy! The more you do the better results you will see.

  • Always reply to your DM’s in a timely manner.

  • Building connections with your audience will establish know, like, and trust factor. This is something you need if you want people to buy from you.
